The VetteLetters Story
1997 - The Sociable Type Society
In 1997 Onno Bevoort and Donald® met each other at the Royal Academy in Den Haag.
Inspired by their great teacher, they set up The Sociable Type Society after a few weeks. It was incorporated into the statutes that the Society may consist of no more than 2 members. This was to the great sorrow for Robert-Jan van Noort.
The LD would exist four years and, in that time, an annual visit would be paid to the Plantin Moretus Museum in Antwerp. Traditionally, at the end of the excursion, there would be dinner at Pizzeria Da Giovanni.
Another tradition would be the annual distribution of the "It's so dark in my mind” trophy. The prize was distributed to the fellow student who had the most hopeless poetic project that study year. This prize would twice be won by Robert-Jan van Noort.
2001 - Lettersatwork
In 2001, Onno & Donald® graduated with their project Lettersatwork.
After four years, having only hung around in the (movable type) printing press workshop and read up on Fontographer, the 3D-design lecturer was a bit sad that they never progressed beyond folding a sheet of A4.
Since Onno and Donald® don’t like sorrowful men, they decided to pass with an 8 for 3D-design and an 8 for Type Design. To this end, they founded the first publisher for 3D fonts: Lettersatwork. The plan succeeded. Although the rest of their grades left much to be desired, the success was overwhelming. Unfortunately, Onno and Donald® couldn’t handle the success, which resulted in the end of Lettersatwork. The site now turns slowly to dust.
2007 - VetteLetters
After four successful years as Letter-Dispuut and Lettersatwork came the black hole. Onno and Donald® realised they had grown apart.
Onno withdrew in peace to the green Voorburg. Donald® moved to Amsterdam and, in a flash of insanity, started studying at the University of Amsterdam.
Donald® then sold his soul to the devil and went commercial. Donald® started earning big money, as you could tell from his weight, his body becoming fatter and fatter. But it was in his blood. His love for Type Designing followed him, caught up with him then brought him back to earth. Inspired by his weight, Donald® ultimately founded VetteLetters: a publisher that publishes only bold typefaces.
But now Donald® goes fanatically to the gym and has gone completely organic. So the excess pounds fly off his body, like hotcakes from the baker’s counter. The BoldTypefaces concept is certainly on shaky ground. But fortunately, there is good fat, such as in herring! There are plans too for Unsaturated Fatty Fonts or Skinny Fonts...
